This well-loved and long established lodge is located on the banks of the dry Savuti Channel which is often referred to as the Stolen River as it has not flowed for about twenty years.
The strangest thing here is that the Savuti Channel area dries up completely in the rainy season and is flooded during the rest of the year. Known for its high concentration of old bull elephants and competitive lion prides. The landscape is peppered with lone dead trees which are popular photographic subjects, and are evidence of the channel's lush past. The dry season is very exciting as animals fight for position at waterholes. The flood season brings a multitude of migratory birds to the marsh lands as well as lion and hyena who prey on the migrating zebra herds.
The setting and layout of the lodge with lots of glass and wide viewing decks is designed to show case the extreme contrasts between the vivid green flood season and the crisp, desert like dry season. Savute Safari Lodge has twelve thatched wood and glass chalets. All are en-suite with private decks. The main lodge comprises of lounge, library and cocktail bar overlooking the channel. The pool and the al fresco dining area overlook a waterhole where an abundance of game comes to drink.
Head out on game drives into the Savuti area including the Savuti Marsh. Visit the ancient San rockart paintings at Gubatsa Hills. Besides good sightings of a wide range of plains game and predators, a note worthy phenomenon in this area is one of the largest zebra migrations in Africa from November to about April.
