Jack's Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans accommodation
Situated on a stark saltpan, Jack’s Camp really is in the middle of nowhere. That fact didn’t deter Jack Bousfield when he stumbled upon the site in the 1960’s. What he saw captured his imagination and he went to work building a lodge so luxurious that it set itself apart from anything in the area.
Situated in the Makgadikgadi Pans which was once the largest inland sea in Africa, Jack’s Camp provides a unique desert experience
X-Factors of Jack's Camp
- Unique desert safari experience
- The ancient pan is a treasure trove of geology and archaeology
- Diversity of species drawn to the pans
- Quad bike expeditions
Although you would expect rustic accommodation in such a stark environment, the opposite is true of Jack’s Camp. The ten stylish canvas tents have indoor and outdoor showers and even flush toilets. The tents, decorated with Persian rugs and cotton sheets are set in a palm grove creating an oasis in the desert.
Activities here centre around the dried up lake. Venture into the Makgadikgadi on quad bikes where you explore remote archeological sites and fossil beds of extinct zebra and hippo.
During the wet summer season, the landscape transforms into a vision of green. Herds of Wildebeest and Zebra migrate to the pan and for a few months the area teems with game and predators. Enjoy getting up close and personal with the meercats who delight in getting a good vantage point of the desert from the top of your head!
This is also the perfect place to interact with the Bushman. At extra cost you can spend time learning about this fascinating people, trying to get water out of the desert and enjoying a lifestyle you will never encounter again!
