Xigera, Okavango Delta accommodation
Xigera (pronounced keejera), in the heart of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, is the home of the sitatunga antelope. This shy antelope is drawn to the floodplains and wetlands of the island’s permanent water channels.
X-Factors of Xigera
- All year round mokoro experience
- Dense populations of antelope and water based animals
- Sightings of Pels fishing owl, African skimmers and lesser jacana
- A unique newspaper (a sandy area of the camp) is “read” each morning providing clues to who walked through the camp the previous night
In the luxury of their tented en suite rooms, guests are woken by drumbeat; a cup of coffee on the verandah, watching the sunrise over the floodplains being the motivation to get out of bed.
Thatch covers Xigera’s central dining area, pub and lounge, which are raised on a wooden deck to enhance views over the floodplains. Wooden walkways connect the eight tents of Xigera to the main camp, and a bridge (used as much by the game as the guests!) stretches over the water to a neighbouring delta island.
After a day of exploring the Okavango Delta channels in peaceful mokoro’s, 4x4 vehicles or on foot.
A dip in the plunge pool back at Xigera refreshes guests before dinner, which is served around a fire in the boma under the clear night skies of Botswana.
In addition to the camp's namesake, lion, elephant, red lechwe and leopard are also regulars in the area and a myriad of bird species include the Pel’s fishing owl, African skimmer, slaty egret, wattled crane and lesser jacana.
