Weather in East Africa |
East African countries, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda have a temperate climate. Summers are sunny and hot, while winters are cooler, but not cold. Temps average between 23'C - 28'C (77-84 degrees Farenheit). The only time to avoid East Africa is during the long rains in April & May. Many lodges close during this time as roads become hard to navigate. The short rains, during October & November are less severe and so this a great time for the migration in Kenya.

When to travel to East Africa |
Both Tanzania and Kenya have a temperate climate, perfect for year round travel. The only times to avoid are the long rains in April and May when much of the area is impassable. The migration happens all through the year in different places around the Serengeti and the Masai Mara. Look at our map to follow the migration. The hot Summer months of November to March are fantastic for a beach holiday to Zanzibar. The Winter months are cooler but usually warm and sunny enough to swim.

Getting around East Africa |
The easiest way to get around East Africa is by air. It isn't the cheapest option but saves a lot of slog and increases your enjoyment of your safari. If you have a medium budget, then consider getting a private guide and vehicle for your East Africa safari. Or combine with some flying to save time. For those with limited wallets, a great way to see East Africa is on a scheduled tour. This means a total of 7 people per safari vehicle (window seat for everyone!)

Visa Requirements |
Most nationalities require visas to the East African countries. For Kenya, visas can be purchased at the point of entry at a cost of $50 per person. For Tanzania visas cost from $100 upwards for most nationalities. They can be attained at your point of entry, but we recommend you get them in advance. There are always coutries that are exempt from visas or that need special clearance so we recommend you check with your local embassy before travel.

Inoculations and Malaria |
All travelers to East Africa are required to have Yellow Fever innoculations. This needs to be done at least 10 days before you leave home. Malaria is prevalent in all the East African countries, please contact your doctor for advice before travel as most malaria tablets need to be taken up to a week before travel.

Currencies |
While the East African countries all have their own currencies, most tourist attractions are priced in US Dollars. Our recommendation is to take US Dollars with you for spending money and visa costs and change small amounts into local curreny if needs be.
