Nairobi

Most people start their safari in Nairobi. The international airport services most of the large airlines out of Europe and Africa, making this a tourism hub. That said, Nairobi is a big bustling African city, and you would be better off staying on the outskirts if you want to relax and enjoy your Kenya Safari.

Nairobi is superb for families, with the elephant orphanage and feeding the giraffes at the Giraffe Center. Or visit famous author Karen Blixens house for a taste of Colonial Africa.

Families in Nairobi
Oddly enough, Nairobi is superb for family safaris. There are endless fun activities on offer, such as feeding the giraffes at Giraffe Manor, patting the orphaned elephants or visiting the crocodile farm.
Nairobi Hotels
We recommend that you choose a hotel in the suburbs of nairobi, rather than the centre of town. There are some lovely resorts and of course, our favourite, Giraffe Manor! See our recommended Nairobi hotels
Karen Blixen
Karen Blixen, of "Out of Africa" fame, lived just outside Nairobi in the beautiful suburb, aptly named Karen. Take the time to visit her old house at the foot of the Ngong Hills for insight into the old colonial lifestyle.
When to travel
Nairobi is a year round destination, however the weather is important as there are two rainy periods. When to travel depends largely on if you want to see the migration or just safari in the Masai Mara
