Pemba

Pemba, Mozambique

Pemba lies on the north coast of Mozambique, at the mouth of Pemba Bay. This vibrant capital of the Cabo Delgado Province is a modern port with classy hotels and restaurants and an international airport. An intriguing history combines an old world charm with colonial architecture. In central Pemba there is a fascinating local market with arts and crafts and traditional silverware.

It is the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago – a string of 32 untouched islands, parts of which comprise a conservation sanctuary protecting one of the most diverse marine areas in the world. Pemba is a prime destination for water sports and scuba diving as the coral reef lies close to the shore. Our favourite accommodation options are the Pemba Beach Hotel and Spa and Medjumbe Island Lodge.

Preferred lodges
Pemba

There are many pristine, white beaches in Pemba; it is a truly spectacular coastline. Famous Wimbe Beach to the north is one of them. The abundant fishing waters of St Lazarus Banks are within easy reach. Pemba Beach Hotel and Spa is on the mainland, while Medjumbe Private Island Lodge is on one of the islands in the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Getting there
Pemba

There are three direct SA Airlink flights a week from Johannesburg to Pemba's airport and one extra which goes via Maputo. There are also direct flights from Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. To get to Medjumbe Private Island, it is a 45 minute private air transfer in a light aircraft from Pemba airport.

Best time to visit
Pemba

Being in the tropics, Mozambique experiences summer rainfalls from October to March. The rainfalls can be particularly heavy in February and some lodges close. November, December and January are extremely hot. The winter months of June, July and August are milder and more pleasant. The best time to visit is between May and November when rainfall and temps are at their lowest. It is also good to travel during the early part of the rainy season, but be prepared for sweltering temps.
