Once a prosperous trading post along Africa's East Coast, Ibo Island still has ruins dating back to the early 1500s. Three forts, a beautiful old Catholic Church and numerous ancient trading buildings make for an interesting wander around the town. Surrounding the island which falls within the Quirimbas National Park, warm Indian Ocean waters are home to abundant marine life including the mysterious dugong. The glorious Ibo Island Lodge has three mansions over 100 years old.

Some of the finest diving in the world is in the Quirimbas Archipelago. The diversity of marine species is astounding against a backdrop of pristine coral reefs. The tropical waters seldom drop below 26'C. Dolphins, Moray Eels, stingrays, barracuda and kingfish can be seen. Leatherback, Loggerhead and Green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Resident reef fish include sweetlips, pufferfish and triggerfish Black-and White-Tip reef sharks, snappers and unicorn fish.
