Skeleton Coast, Namibia
This coast is named for the bleached whale and seal bones which covered the shore when the whaling industry was still active, as well as the skeletal shipwrecks caused by rocks offshore in the fog. More than a thousand vessels of various sizes litter the coast. It is considered one of the most desolate places on earth and with only two accommodation options it is unspoilt and often forgotten.
The Skeleton Coast National Park has been declared over much of the area. Interesting places to visit are the clay castles of the Hoarisib, the Agate Mountain salt pans and the large seal colony at Cape Fria. Wildlife documentaries have often been made the adaptations of the plant and insect species to the extreme dryness of the area. Many depend on thick sea fogs for their moisture.
