Madikwe
A popular choice for families as it is malaria-free, Madikwe is one of South Africa’s largest game reserves. Old cattle ranches were successfully restored to natural vegetation and an extensive restocking programme was undertaken to bring back game species that historically occurred in the region.
Located in the North West Province, Madikwe is a three-way partnership between the state, local communities and the private sector. A people-based approach to wildlife conservation is practiced benefiting local communities.
Most of the lodges within Madikwe are family friendly and many offer specialised children’s safaris. This means that your kids are provided with fun activities which can include bush drives, making paper, tracking and frog hunts. We are malaria free safari experts and we look forward to helping you plan your safari in Madikwe.

| Malaria-free family safaris |
|
It is great not need mosquito repellant or to have to remember to take malaria pills. A safari in a malaria-free area is just as good as the Kruger Park area. In Madikwe, children of all ages are welcome at Jaci's Lodges. There are child minders and special 'jungle drives' for little ones. Tuningi Safari Lodge is one of the few 5-star safari lodges in South Africa that welcomes children. On arrival they get an activity booklet to draw what they have seen on their game drives which are called 'bumbles'.

| The Madikwe Wild Dogs |
|
Once called Cape Hunting Dogs, the Wild Dog is one of Africa's most endangered carnivores. Less than 5000 still survive in the wild and viable populations are only found in larger reserves and uninhabited areas in southern and eastern Africa. Part of Madikwe's huge game translocation operation called Operation Phoenix included relocating wild dogs into the reserve. Today Madikwe has a thriving population of these gregarious animals. It is fascinating to observe their social hierarchy and antics.

| Combining the Madikwe |
|
Madikwe's location makes it ideal to combine a malaria-free safari experience with Sun City, a luxury casino resort bordering the Pilanesberg National Park. There are 4 hotels including the spectacular Palace of the Lost City, and 2 Gary Player golf courses. You can also combine the Madikwe with another malaria-free family-friendly destination - the luxurious Ant's Nest & Ant's Hill bush homes situated on adjoining private game reserves in the Waterberg.

| Getting to the Madikwe |

Madikwe Game Reserve is a scenic 4 hour drive from Johannesburg's international airport. If you arrive by car, make sure you know which entrance you need to go in as there are several. For the most part, the lodges in the western part of the reserve are accessed by the Wonderboom Gate. Lodges located in the central and eastern part are accessed via the Abjaterskop Gate. There are also scheduled charter flights to Madikwe, an easy 45 minute flight from Johannesburg.
