The nine luxurious glass and thatched suites of Kwandwe Main Lodge (a Relais & Chateaux member) trace the Great Fish River and thatched viewing decks have glorious views of the riverbanks, which teem with birds and wildlife. Private plunge pools add to the allure of the suites, which have floor to ceiling doors that open up to let the sounds and sights of the bush in. Living areas at Kwandwe Main Lodge are African chic and viewing decks have breathtaking views. Exceptional meals of Pan-African influence are served in the dining room, on the private deck of your suite, or around the boma fire.
Kwandwe Ecca Lodge is the newest lodge on the Kwandwe Game Reserve. Innovative design incorporates corrugated iron roofs, stone-and-mesh gabion walls, sliding glass, timber and gauze doors and the effect is spectacular. The six intimate suites and all living areas at Kwandwe Ecca Lodge have been designed to open up as much as possible. Glass enclosed showers in the en suite bathrooms are a striking feature and the sitting room can easily be converted into a sleeping area for children of eleven years old or younger. The leisure space at Ecca Lodge incorporates an expansive sitting room, dining area and bar. Food is delicious and wholesome, prepared in an open-plan, interactive kitchen. An attractive rim-flow pool is the perfect place from which to absorb the peace of the Eastern Cape plains.
For the ultimate in exclusivity the Uplands Homestead (also a Relais & Chateaux member), located in a remote valley in the Kwandwe Game Reserve, is a unique private safari villa, housed in a restored farmhouse dating back to 1905. Ideal for a family or group of six, Uplands Homestead comprises three en suite bedrooms with private patios; a cosy sitting room and dining area; and a large swimming pool and gazebo. A private chef, butler and ranger and exclusive use of a 4x4 vehicle is all adds to the X-factor.
A resident historian is on hand to recount the fascinating saga of the battle between the Xhosa people and the British settlers along the mighty Fish River.
Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is home to the big five and many fascinating nocturnal animals. Guests at any of the Kwandwe lodges are treated to daily interpretive game drives under the guidance of CC Africa’s highly experienced rangers and Xhosa trackers. Guided bush walks are equally interesting and much can be learned about the Eastern Cape’s unusual fauna and flora. Canoeing on the Great Fish River and rhino tracking are other optional pursuits.
