Amakhosi Lodge (meaning 'The place of Kings' in Zulu) is situated within KwaZulu-Natal's Amazulu Private Game Reserve, in South Africa. Amakhosi is positioned on the banks of Zululand's Mkuze River in the ten thousand hectare Amazulu Private Game Reserve. Five and a half hours drive from Johannesburg and four hours from Durban, it is home to the Big Five, fifteen types of antelope and over four hundred bird species.
For an evening of traditional dances under the skies of Zululand and a day packed full of wild adventure, the Amakhosi Lodge is just a short hour's flight from the bustling city of Gauteng.
When arriving here you'll be captivated by the changing scenery and rich cultural history. It's recommended to arrive just after lunch because not only will you be served 'High Tea', but you will also be allocated a game ranger and taken out for an early evening game drive. In that way you can familiarize yourself with this breathtaking environment and catch a glimpse of what Amakhosi Lodge has in store for you.
When retiring after a day of travels and wonder, you will be welcomed by a rustic room in the bush. The six well-appointed thatch roofed chalets of Amakhosi Lodge overlook the Mkuze River which flows through KwaZulu-Natal.
Each chalet is equipped with air conditioning, a mini-bar, tea and coffee making facilities and a lavish en suite bathroom. Or if it's your special occasion and you're looking for the perfect honeymoon getaway, Amakhosi Lodge offers two 'Umntwana' Suites, meaning "a child of royalty" in Zulu. And the name speaks for itself!
One of Amakhosi's main activities is going for a game drive in an open Land Rover. If it's an early call, have no fear because all game vehicles are equipped with blankets for chilly evenings or mornings, and ponchos for the rainy season. During certain periods of the year, guests are even allowed to venture into the bush to visit a world of amphibians.
Brunches, high teas and dinners at Amakhosi Lodge are fit for a king and sundowner cocktails in the midst of the bush on the evening game drives are a special experience. For those who like to relax, the Amakhosi Main Lodge houses a library, swimming pool, game viewing deck and an outdoor lounge overlooking the river.
So if you've come here to witness a pride of lions, listen to mating frogs and are willing to patiently wait for the powerful eagle to swoop by, then you've come to the right place!
