GROOTBOS NATURE RESERVE

Grootbos Nature Reserve, Overberg accommodation

Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is located in the area of Gansbaai, a few kilometers outside of Hermanus on the Garden Route. For nature lovers, Grootbos is cornucopia: a thousand hectares of milkwood forest and fynbos cover the reserve and the marine life of Walker Bay is prolific; Gansbaai is famous for its Great White sharks; the stretch between Hermanus and Gansbaai offers some of the best viewing of Southern Right whales; and penguins, seals, seabirds and many other creatures inhabit the small islands off the coast of Gansbaai.

X-Factors of Grootbos Nature Reserve

  • The epi-centre of the Cape Floral Kingdom
  • Diving with Great White Sharks in Gansbaai
  • Private deck with views over the nature reserve and ocean
  • Wide variety of included activities
  • Proximity to nature

Constructed from local stone and timber, Grootbos blends harmoniously into the milkwood forests, which provide privacy for the cottages. Each cottage is luxuriously furnished and has a secluded deck with magnificent views over the nature reserve.

Enticing meals reflect the care taken over menus by Grootbos’ head chef. A flourishing herb garden provides inspiration for innovative dishes which combine plenty of freshly caught seafood and seasonal vegetables.

A plethora of outdoor activities allow guests to make the most of glorious South African weather. Learn about the myriad of fynbos species inhabiting Grootbos Private Nature Reserve (the most expansive privately owned fynbos garden in the world!) during guided walks. Bird watching is excellent at Grootbos as the fynbos attracts a diversity of bird species and there are many marine birds to be spotted too. The intrepid can dive off the coast of Gansbaai to see the Great White Sharks – from the safety of a cage of course! Those not quite brave enough can take a leisurely cruise around the bay to see the seals and penguins. Hermanus is a short drive away and is alive with local craft markets, boutique shops and restaurants.
