An alternative to the N2 highway, Route 62 is a road traveller's dream. It meanders between Cape Town and Oudtshoorn passing through the Breede River Valley and the Klein Karoo past wine and port estates, ostrich farms and orchards. In Oudtshoorn, visit the Cango Caves and an ostrich show farm. Ronnies Sex Shop is a wacky roadside attraction. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is a vast tract of private game reserve.

The largest town in the Little Karoo, it is home to the world's largest ostrich population. Early prosperity was due to ostrich feathers being fashionable in Paris. The area was originally inhabited by Bushmen, as evidenced by the many rock paintings found in caves in the surrounding Swartberg mountains. There is also an unusually large range of succulent plant species and diverse birdlife. Blessed with over 330 sunshine days a year, Oudtshoorn is a great place for outdoor activities.

No visit is complete without a stop at one of the specialised ostrich breeding farms. You can even ride one of these large, flightless birds! Choose from several tours that take you through the spectacular underground wonder of the Cango Caves, situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the Swartberg mountains. The Cango Wildlife Ranch offers rare encounters with cheetah, crocodiles, pythons and even Bengal tigers. Walk with meerkats with the Meerkatman.

Rock formations and rock art, indigenous flora and fauna spread across mountains and plains - Sanbona, a malaria free wilderness reserve, is privately owned and home to the endangered Riverine Rabbit and the only free roaming White Lions in the world. Planning to open a farm stall, Ronnie painted the name "Ronnie's Shop" on a cottage next to Route 62. His friends played a prank on him, changing the name to "Ronnies Sex Shop". Initially angry, he decided to leave the name. Friends stopped by making it a regular hangout and eventually he decided to open a bar instead. The messages on the walls are from visitors from all over the world, bikers and travellers always enjoy a pit stop here!

Route 62 meanders through some of South Africa's most fertile valleys and leading wine regions. The Breede River gives life to the Robertson and Worcester Wine Valleys. Something different is the Route 62 Brandy Route which includes visiting points at Worcester, Montagu, Barrydale, Calitzdorp (most famous for its Port), Oudtshoorn and De Rust. Together these wine valleys produce some of South Africa's finest wines, brandies and Port.
