Timbavati
The Timbavati is the largest private game reserve bordering the Kruger National Park. The wildlife area is constantly expanding as more and more farmland and hunting areas are being returned to their natural ecological state. As there are no fences between Kruger and the Timbavati, animals can roam freely. View game from open vehicles, on foot or from the comfort of your own room at luxurious private game lodges.
With only 6 small personalised lodges in the Timbavati concession and a high concentration of game, you seldom see other vehicles at sightings, affording you exclusivity at a surprisingly good rate. There are over 40 mammal species in the Timbavati including the Big Five as well as 360 species of bird life. Our favourite accommodation options are Tanda Tula, Gomo Gomo and Ngala Tented Camp.

| Why the Timbavati |
The Timbavati offers excellent value for money. Lodges in the region offer several game viewing options including off road driving, bush walks or night drives. We recommend going out when it is dark as you will see unusual nocturnal animals that only come out at night. As it is cooler, it is also when many of the predators are more active and go on hunts. From private vehicles with your own private tracker, the game viewing experiences are exceptional.

| Our preferred lodges in Timbavati |
Tanda Tula has 12 luxurious East African-style tents with timber decks overlooking a dry river bed. The Tandala thatched suite has its own pool, personal cook, ranger and game-viewing vehicle. For the more adventurous, sleep outs can be arranged at the hide overlooking the waterhole. Simbavati is an intimate, child-friendly lodge where you have the freedom to plan your own activities. Ngala Safari Lodge reflects the charm and romance of the safari tradition.
| Best time to visit |
The best time to visit is from July to mid October. During these months, it is dry and cool offering pleasant game viewing weather. As there is not much rainfall during winter in the reserve, the animals congregate around the waterholes so are easier to find. The bush is also thinner. Summer is the rainy season. The bush is green and lush and much thicker making game harder to spot.

| Getting there to the Timbavati |
You will be charged an entrance fee into the Timbavati so be prepared. It is about a five hour direct drive from Johannesburg. There are also daily flights on SA Express from Johannesburg into Hoedspruit Airport, followed by a road transfer of 45 minutes. Alternatively you can hire your own a car from the Avis desk at the airport. If you are flying into the Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit, a "lodge-hop" will drive you into the reserve. Kings Camp has a tarred landing strip for private aircraft.
