Bartholomeus Klip, Winelands accommodation
Bartholomeus Klip is both a working wheat and sheep farm and a nature reserve in a wonderfully rural South African setting in the Western Cape. Its proximity to Cape Town (one hour from Cape Town International Airport) makes it a convenient and interesting getaway.
X-Factors of Bartholomeus Klip
- Proximity to Cape Town International Airport
- Endemic wildflowers
- Endangered species rehabilitation projects
- Luxury in a rural South African setting
- High tea and tempting menus
- So much to do!
The original Victorian homestead of Bartholomeus Klip has been meticulously renovated with fine fabrics and family antiques that create the ambience of a much loved home. Rose-filled gardens and ancient oaks surround the house, and benches tucked away in quiet places provide perfect pews to absorb the estate’s peaceful atmosphere. Comfort is key in the hotel’s five Victorian-style en suite bedrooms. You can expect specially made pure cotton bedding, luxurious toiletries, toweling gowns and no TVs to spoil the country feeling (there are, however, two TVs in the hotel’s public areas for essential viewing).
The food - French traditional but with a South African flavour - is one of the highlights of a stay at Bartholomeus Klip. Tea is a serious affair with toothsome delicacies such as scones with thick farm cream and homemade preserves, pecan meringues, apple tarts, prune and ricotta cheesecake and savoury bruschettas.
Bartholomeus Klip has a salt-water swimming pool, ideal for sunbathing or sundowners and a boathouse with spectacular views over the dam, where wonderful brunches are served. For the energetic, the estate offers wonderful walks or hikes in the reserve, mountain biking through the wheat fields, bird watching and windsurfing or boating on the dam. Twice daily game drives through the reserve are another appealing pass time and Bartholomeus Klip manages a wildlife conservation project aimed at rehabilitating quagga and breeding buffalo. The more laidback can lounge in the sun in the expansive garden, read a book at the edge of the dam or loll on the pool deck.
A few of the Western Cape’s wine routes are nearby – an excellent opportunity to visit some of the estates for a wine tasting and stop off for a leisurely lunch.
