Lying just 2 km northeast of the Island of Zanzibar, Mnemba Island is only one mile in circumference and is surrounded by a conservation zone coral reef. This allows guests of the resort to snorkel and dive with an array of tropical fish, including giant turtles and ghost crabs – a pure sensory feast for both the intrepid experienced diver as well as the timid beginner!
Due to this small size of the island, Mnemba Island Lodge is very exclusive, and has only ten banda cottages. Guests are transported from Zanzibar on a 16 foot traditional flat-bottomed boat (yet another great way to enjoy the splendours of the sea), and then shown to their spectacular hand-woven bungalows.
By using materials such as tree branches and traditional palm matting, as well as ceiling fans, the bandas are kept cool and refreshing in the Zanzibar heat, as well as in keeping with the exquisite style of the Zanzibar culture.
Each bungalow is surrounded on three sides by tropical beach forest, and overlooks the beach and coral reef. Guests can enjoy this breathtaking landscape of the privacy of their own wraparound verandah. Dining is a spectacular affair. Baskets of fresh fish, tropical fruit and lobster are sailed onto the island daily on traditional ngalawa outriggers. Lunch is a buffet, with a choice of succulent fruit such as papaya, mangoe and star apple to choose from, as well as the fruits of the sea.
But it is the evening meal which is magnificent. If you choose, you can enjoy your meal in the dining area with a view of the ocean. However, the resort offers you the chance to dine alfresco on the beach, with only the stars above you and the waves gently caressing your feet.
