Poverty, crime, and HIV/AIDS are widespread in Southern Africa. This is made worse by overcrowded townships and lack of jobs and education. Young people are particularly vulnerable and easily fall into hopelessness and despair. By targeting kids between the ages of 10 and 18 years, Hoops 4 Hope is able to motivate and support these young people to become healthy productive adults.

HIV presents the biggest obstacle for the African youth. Particularly young, poor, women are most susceptible to contracting HIV. Girls are four times more likely to be infected than boys, particularly within informal township communities where this group makes up a staggering 17.8% of new infections.

A frightening 62% of HIV positive young people thought they were at little to no risk.

By targeting 10 to 18-year-olds, Hoops 4 Hope reaches individuals at especially high risk before they place themselves in dangerous situations. By using community-based sports programs as the vehicle, Hoops 4 Hope is able to work with young people on a regular basis for extended time periods, thus increasing the likelihood that the education they receive will change their future.

Hoops 4 Hope Approach
Organized sports encourage more than healthy competition; they help erase racial boundaries, unite adults and children from different backgrounds, build development skills and foster trusting relationships between coaches and young people. Team sports provide an infrastructure where social skills can develop. Young people in our programs learn that the skills they will develop on our court, extend well beyond the playing field and are applicable to life�s challenges.
