What makes Abu Camp extraordinary is that guests have the opportunity of getting a glimpse into the secret world of the resident herd of elephants. Named after a much-loved bull elephant, Abu Camp is Africa’s original elephant-back safari experience and has been running for over twenty years. Guests are able to ‘meet’ and interact with the elephants whilst walking with them. Managed and owned by Wilderness Safaris and set in an exclusive, private and unspoiled riverine forest in the middle of the famed Okavango Delta, guests are invited to stay in magnificent high ceiling tents from where they are able to observe these magnificent animals.

This prime Botswana Safari location comprises of six en-suite luxury tents with panoramic views which can be enjoyed from each corner of the room. Each tent is beautifully decked-out in an elegant canvassing and classic safari style, featuring tasteful fittings and furnishings which are individually chosen for each room. Seamlessly blending into the natural surroundings, the tents are voluminous and high-roofed, and each tent has a uniquely sculptured teak deck with an outdoor and indoor shower. Each suite also boasts a separate comfortable seating area complete with a writing desk and an elevated, private wooden deck situated around the jackal-berry and fig trees shading the tents.

For the ultimate African Elephant experience, guests can now spend a night under the stars in the newly created Star Bed; a luxury unit raised high above the ground overlooking the elephant boma. Well-lit pathways connect the private tents with the Camp’s main lodge which features imaginative use of poles and canvas, decorated with elegant African hand-woven linen fabrics, ceramics, and wooden pieces.

The main lodge consists of a lounge and dining room, a well-stocked bar, a library filled with bird books and field guides, a secluded swimming pool, and a communication area for those guests who like to stay in touch with the outside world. Alfresco cuisine by internationally trained chefs can be enjoyed on the deck and in full view of the lagoon with its resident elephants and hippos.

Abu Camp offers guests the traditional Botswana Safari morning, afternoon or evening game drives, as well as the traditional poled mokoro canoe trips along the vast Delta waterways during the flood season. This is a bird watcher’s paradise where you can spot Pied Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Rufous-bellied Heron, Malachite Kingfisher and Great Egret. At this incredible wildlife sanctuary, you will also be able to see giraffe, buffalo, zebra, impala, letchwe, warthog, and lion, amongst other wildlife.

But the Camp’s real attraction is the opportunity to interact and spend one-on-one time with the elephant herd. This private Delta concession provides the perfect setting for the resident elephant herd and guests have the opportunity to walk with them in the company and safety of skilled elephant handlers to gain a greater insight into these glorious mammals.

This Botswana Safari experience ticks all the boxes and provides a haven of peace and tranquillity, whilst showcasing the magnificent landscape and wildlife found at the Okavango Delta. Abu Camp offers guests the extraordinary chance to become a part of an African elephant herd.
