Amid the rolling hills and uninterrupted views of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – home of the elusive and mesmerizing Mountain Gorilla – Buhoma Lodge offers guests the ultimate in East African hospitality. The recently renovated gorilla-trekking lodge is perfectly placed for travelers longing to spot the enigmatic giants of the forest, and the lodge is the ideal base for forest expeditions. It also provides a range of accommodation depending on your pocket. All of the options are geared towards offering extreme comfort, with top-notch facilities and services ensuring a home away from home in this forest utopia.

Buhoma Lodge boasts eight traditionally built cottages, using sustainable, locally sourced materials wherever possible. Each cottage has its own private verandah from which guests can unwind after a long day of trekking. The cottages feature sweeping views of the majestic forest, as well as fireplaces to create a delightfully cozy refuge. They also all have en suite bathrooms with hot showers and have been carefully mosquito proofed. Thanks to the updated solar-power system, there’s also plenty of power for recharging cameras to ensure that guests don’t miss out on photos during gorilla sightings.

Dining at Buhoma can be quite sociable, and from the terrace to the dining room, it’s the perfect opportunity to meet other guests and enjoy delicious freshly prepared meals using local ingredients from both a locally and an internationally inspired menu. The well-stocked bar has a selection of local and imported drinks – and is manned by the kind of friendly and helpful team that just adds to the appeal of this establishment.

Obviously the big draw here is gorilla tracking, and few other places offer an opportunity to get as up close and personal with these magnificent creatures. But this is also the place to enjoy meandering nature walks through the ancient tropical forest, and experiencing a wealth of other exciting wildlife and different bird species, especially as part of a guided tour.

Another popular outing is a trip to the local village, where a visit to the Batwa Pygmy offers the chance to learn about their traditions and watching their energetic dance routines.
