Explore the southern area of Damaraland and all that it has to offer whilst staying in a wonderfully unique lodge, perfectly integrated into this wild and rugged landscape. CampKipwe is carefully built between large granite boulders, the positioning of its thatched-roof lodge and igloo-shaped rooms making the most of the superb views across the valley to the rocky hills beyond.
Blending right into the boulder landscape, CampKipwe’s 10 rooms have stone walls and roofs made of rough mopane branches. The interiors are simple yet have a romantic feel with comfortable beds, small tables made from tree trunks, and private decks where you can sit and enjoy your slice of the view.
Possibly the best feature of these rooms is the outdoor bathrooms built into the rocks: imagine secluded showers under a star-filled night sky – a truly magical experience!
Go on morning game drives to track the famous Damaraland elephants, elusive creatures who have adapted really well to these arid desert-like conditions. It’s also an easy drive from the lodge to the incredible rock art and engravings at Twyfelfontein, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the nearby volcanic formations known as the Organ Pipes, BurntMountain and Petrified Forest.
Back at the lodge there’s a small swimming pool built into the rocks – a welcome reprieve from the desert heat – and a few shaded sun loungers. The main lodge is housed in four thatched domes and includes an open-fronted dining room and inviting lounge area, both with amazing views.
The small size of CampKipwe gives the lodge a relaxed and intimate atmosphere: grab a book and settle into one of the leather couches or swap stories with the other guests at the bar.
Don’t miss the sundowners high up on the rocks, it’s a climb to get there but the view (as well as the drinks and tasty nibbles laid on by the staff) make it well worth the effort. Afterwards dinner is served out on the deck or around the fire in the boma, and you can look forward to good quality food, along with friendly and professional service.
A small lodge sensitively set into this rugged landscape, CampKipwe is a fantastic choice for anyone wanting to explore Twyfelfontein and the incredibly scenic Damaraland region.
