The 5-Star Chapungu Luxury Tented Camp is located in the highly acclaimed Thornybush Private Nature Reserve. Connected to the main camp by pathways through the bushveld, eight en-suite luxurious tents overlook the African savannah and offer a tranquil, intimate retreat. Styled with elegant colonial flair, the tents are fitted with all the creature comforts one could need in the bush. Double doors open on to private decks, allowing visitors to become absorbed in the natural surroundings and observe the birdlife and game that wander past. Trees surround the spacious bath that stands open to the elements on the deck.
Birdlife is prolific and the reserve is home to a wealth of African game, including the Big Five. Rangers impart extensive knowledge about the fauna and flora whilst Shangaan trackers fascinate guests with legends and folklore of the area and share a lifetime’s worth of traditional remedies derived from indigenous plants. Day excursions such as a trip to God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and the Three Rondawels can be arranged. Other favorite excursions include hot-air ballooning and a visit to the Cheetah Breeding Project. A flip in a helicopter or light aircraft will reveal the magnificence of the region from a bird’s perspective.
A hearty breakfast awaits guests back at the camp and is generally served in the main area that overlooks a beautiful rock pool. Comfortable chairs placed alongside the pool entice guests to languish in the sun. Seating in the thatched open-sided main area provides the perfect spot for relaxing in quiet contemplation. At the Amani Spa, two full time therapists are on hand to help guests truly unwind.
Sundowners over the savannah are the prelude to nightfall when the ranger’s torchlight illuminates the nocturnal game that comes out of hiding at night. A decadent three course dinner is served in either the bush, lodge or in the boma – a typically African way of dining around a central fire under the stars. The honesty bar invites guests to take a nightcap and swap bush stories.
Hailed “out of world” by previous guests, the camp provides an authentically African experience.
