andBeyond Xudum Okavango Delta Lodge

It’s said that you’ve only truly experienced Africa when you’ve taken a dug-out mokoro canoe down the awe-inspiring Okavango Delta in Botswana. Every year, 10 million cubic meters of water from the Okavango river floods the Kalahari desert, only to eventually evaporate completely before it reaches any sea or ocean. This unique contrast of dry land and magnificent quantities of waters is what gives the Okavango Delta its mysterious allure, and has given it its recognition as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. Delta Camp is situated in the most picturesque part of the Delta where the Boro and Metsemasweu channels meet.

From the deck of the dining area of the lodge, a magnificent view presents itself. The swamp and riverine forests of the delta play host to a vast array of Africa’s most impressive creatures. Bush-bashing elephants, lazy hippos and sly Nile crocodiles all call the delta their home, and are seen regularly around the lodge. The eager observer might also spot lions, leopards, Cape hunting dogs, buffalo and some of the rarer African antelopes like the tsessebe, lechwe and sitatunga (marshbuck).

Delta Camp is situated on a small island and is accessed by a light aircraft from the town of Maun. The camp’s chalets are built around the old trees of the island forest – incorporating the trees in the structure itself giving each unit a unique character.

Because of the climate, there’s no need for glass windows, so the feeling is one of being both outside and inside at the same time, without sacrificing any privacy in the process. Luxury standards include hot and cold running water, mosquito netting and solar-powered electricity, as well as showers with magnificent views of the surrounding floodplains.

Although guests would be tempted to just sit back and take in the scenery, there’s no shortage of adventure-filled activities at Delta Camp – such as  twice daily walking safaris or mokoro canoe ventures into the Moremi Game Reserve, as well as fully serviced mokoro camping expeditions of two to eoight days.
