Durban and The North Coast

Cosmopolitan Durban was until very recently South Africa’s biggest city (that honor belongs to Johannesburg now) so there is no shortage of things to do and see in the city of sunshine. Blessed with sunny weather for most of the year, Africa’s largest port city boasts both miles of golden beaches and a vibrant city life with trendy bars and restaurants – making it the perfect family vacation destination.

Home to the largest Indian population outside of India, Durban is an exciting mixing pot of cultures and food. The beachfront is lined with traditional Zulu wares and rickshaws, while a tantalizing curry or bunny chow is never too far away. For the professional traveller, Durban’s world-class conference center regularly hosts major international events while several shopping malls, and some of the best golf courses in South Africa, will keep you more than happy when business is done.

Durban North, Umhlanga and Ballito are all great family areas just outside Durban itself. These idyllic suburbs have some great guesthouses and hotels and a real holiday spirit about them, with brilliant untouched beaches and lots of little family-owned eateries and pubs. They are very popular with South Africans during the end of the year holidays and buzz with Christmas spirit.

Further North up the coast are ecological gems like the World Heritage Site St Lucia Wetland Park, the KwaZulu Safari area with Phinda and Hlhuwe-Imfolozi game reserves and the Drakensberg Mountain range. These areas are home to great wildlife sanctuaries and activities include rafting, scuba diving, game watching, hiking, abseiling and more. With 20 different ecosystems and three lakes, the fish and birdlife are second to none.

Sodwana Bay has been rated amongst the Top 10 scuba diving sites in the world and the town boats the unique privilege of being simultaneously a beach, forest and wetland town. Kosi Bay Nature Reserve is a marine sanctuary with pristine beaches completely untouched and unaltered – just as nature intended them.

With easy access to Mozambique, plus the opportunity to mix a family beach vacation with a safari and wilderness one, Durban should definitely be included in your South African itinerary. Speak to us about planning the perfect holiday to the beautiful Zulu Kingdom!
