Thought to be one of the most elegant lodges in Kenya, Elsa’s Kopje is named after Elsa the lioness, made famous by George and Joy Adamson’s book and film Born Free. Upmarket and set in the most magnificent of surrounds, Elsa’s Kopje is the perfect place to view rhino in their natural habitat, along with a variety of other wildlife, all while enjoying the complete tranquillity. Famed for its friendly staff and their environmentally conscious approach, it is the attention to detail that makes the lodge what it is. A few days here are a real treat.
Elsa’s Kopje is practically invisible to the eye upon approach and is nestled snuggly into Mughwango Hill, blending in with the rocky crags. Just 10 kilometers from the equator this luxury lodge is made up of 8 cottages, each uniquely designed and boasting its own magnificent views across the Meru plains.
Each cottage is spacious and elegantly appointed, with double or twin beds and en suite bathroom. The guest areas include an open bar, lounge and dining area that looks over a beautiful, crystal clear infinity pool. Another unique feature is the 15-meter wide suspension bridge that joins two of the rooms to the lodge over a gorge.
Elsa’s Kopje is the only lodge operating within Meru National Park, which means that guests have complete privacy and are far away from the crowds. Meru National Park is the convergence of a variety of habitats and provides a home for a large number of animal, bird and plant life.
The park itself is made up of wetlands, plains, palm and riverine forests, each with its own eco system that include over 350 bird species and game typically found in northern Kenya. Some of the animal you may be likely to see include buffalo, lion, leopard, giraffe, zebra, ostrich and kudu, to name a few.
Guests can also enjoy bush walks through the area as well as fishing. Night game drives are taken in the company of a passionate and experienced guide.
Elsa’s Kopje is one of the continent’s best-kept secrets.
