Gorilla Trekking Safaris

For some, trekking through primeval African forests to see the wild gorillas may be something ‘completely different’, for others, a jungle expedition to sit with the gorillas may be the emotional fulfillment of a life-long dream. Absolutely no other wildlife encounter in Africa rivals time spent in the company of these magnificent apes with their soft brown eyes and human-like mannerisms.

Gorilla Safaris in Rwanda & Uganda

The impenetrable rainforests of Uganda and Rwanda are home to these charismatic and much endangered primates and is where your gorilla trekking safari will begin. Caught in the crossfire of civil war, hunted, captured and persecuted, wild Gorillas sit on the very brink of extinction. There may now only be found in a handful of far-flung locations in deepest Africa, where they cautiously exist in a small number of protected reserves.
Gorilla safaris are a highly restricted activity; numbers are controlled & permits are involved, so trekking to see the gorillas can truly be considered an incredible privilege.

For those fortunate enough to make the journey, the expedition begins either in Entebbe in Uganda or in Kigali in Rwanda, from where guests are escorted to camps and lodges in remote reserves and parks to commence their quest for the reclusive primates.

Under observant supervision of professional guides and trackers, hikers are lead along secret bush paths in the often impermeable rainforest to conquer the somewhat arduous hike in search for these threatened animals. The gorilla’s thick jungle habitat is a harsh environment – the dense vegetation and humid, wet and muddy conditions of the forests, coupled with many steep hills and persistent insects, make the trek challenging.

Once located, the gorillas are approached tentatively and reverently, visitors may spend up to an hour respectfully sitting with and observing the great beautiful beasts. Sitting face-to-face with a family of gorillas, watching these gentle powerful giants one-on-one while they forage, groom, play and interact with each other, and display emotions, all in a very human manner, is a poignant meeting unlike any other. The primal connection is tangible and heart-rending, the encounter life-changing.

Whatever the motivation, trekking into the verdant green forests of East Africa to track wild gorillas is a hugely moving experience and a considerable honor.
