Right in the middle of the prime game-viewing area of the Masai Mara National Reserve, in Kenya, Governors’ Camp is a historical site once reserved for the colonial Governors of Kenya, hence its name. Overlooking the Mara River on one side and open plains on the other and shaded by riverine forest trees, the unfenced tented camp is the perfect setting to discover the diverse wildlife of the plains and river all year round, and well placed to catch the Great Migration and river crossings in the months between July and October.
Governors’ Camp has 37 tents well-spaced among the trees, some looking out over the open plains and others with river views. Elephants, hippos and other animals often wander through the camp to graze, so that you enjoy close up animal viewing without even leaving your tent (there are always camp askaris around to escort guests safely should an elephant be blocking the path).
The classic safari tents are comfortably furnished and spacious, with en-suite bathrooms, showers, flush toilets and hot water. A private verandah with camp chairs and table is the perfect place to relax in between game drives. There is electric light in the tents and wifi is available in a separate tent in the main area.
Two game drives a day set out to explore the sweeping plains, accompanied by experienced and friendly guides who track down the best sightings, from leopards in trees to a cheetah or lion kills, or the drama and excitement of a river crossing during the Great Migration. All the Big Five can be found here in the Masai Mara although the black rhino is still endangered.
Just as fascinating is the diversity of smaller animals and bird-life seen on a walking safari, and the birds-eye perspective of a hot air balloon excursion. Looking over scenic views of river and plains at the open dining area, enjoy plentiful, tasty meals serenaded by the sounds of hippos , or visited by the charming mongoose and comical warthogs, making you feel at home in the heart of Africa.
