From it’s position perched high above Lake Naivasha, the Great Rift Valley Lodge and Golf Resort looks out over one of mankind’s oldest views – across the vast plains of the world’s largest valley. Situated just an hour and a half’s drive from Nairobi, the lodge is built on the mountain that the Maasai call Ol Donyo Oourru, which means ‘mountain of smoke’. It’s roughly 7 000 feet above sea level, giving it magnificent views to the west and east, over the waters of Lake Naivasha to Mount Longonot and the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains.
The location of the Great Rift Valley Lodge makes it the perfect stopover accommodation when on safari to the Masai Mara, or en route to western Kenya. It has twin and double rooms, all spacious and with private balconies that overlook the magnificent expanse of the Rift Valley. These rooms are tastefully furnished, with four-poster beds, wooden furniture and modern en suite bathrooms.
The Longonot Villas are modern houses, complete with every requirement for a comfortable stay. There is a living room, dining room and kitchen, with a master bedroom on the top floor. The ground floor has two bedrooms that open up onto the garden.
The lodge comes complete with an 18-hole championship golf course that is known to be both exciting and challenging. Golfers are required to give way to the wildlife that have taken up residence on the lush fairways and in the ponds.
Guests can also enjoy a guided nature walk through the Eburu Forest that stands 9300ft above sea level and explore caves that were used by the Mau Mau freedom fighters to hide from the colonialists. The well-trained guides can take you on a star gazing safari. Because the Equator runs almost through the middle of Kenya, this is one of the only places in the world where you can see the northern and southern hemisphere skies from one place.
Guests can also go on an excursion to hell’s gate cliffs, where you can find the biggest nesting colony of vultures.
