Within the Kruger National Park’s vast umbrella of conservation ethics lives the dreams of visionaries like Colonel Stephenson Hamilton, who championed the move to create a much-needed protected area for South Africa’s wildlife along the South Africa-Mozambique border. Hamiltons Tented Camp takes his name to honor his legacy and offer something special to adventurous travelers. Six extravagantly appointed canvas tents on stilts, complete with teakwood floors, are styled to capture the grandeur of the luxury safari of the early 20th century. Simply put, it’s Out of Africa down to the last detail. What’s more, Hamiltons is also TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence 2013 winner.
Located in the Mluwati concession of the Kruger National Park, the massive expanse of the 20 000 square kilometer-reserve offers unforgettable wildlife experiences, while boasting the sheer romance and elegance of the colonial era – complete with a butler service. The beautifully furnished camp sleeps twelve, and the en-suite tents feature slipper baths, outdoor showers, air-conditioning, intercom systems to facilitate communication between the units, and the all-important mosquito netting draped over the expansive canopy beds. It’s a birder’s paradise too, and since the camp is located near the Nwatswitsonto River, it provides prime viewing opportunities of the area’s wildlife population.
Discerning travelers will appreciate the attention to detail, fine cuisine, and the expert game rangers and trackers, who guide explorations through the indigenous bush and take pride in showing guests the gems of African wildlife. And they’re attuned to the movements of the Big Five (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) to boot, and have a thorough knowledge of the variety of game that inhabits the area, as well as their feathered friends and the local flora.
The camp is unfenced, giving the animals free roaming rights on the property, so it’s recommended for children over eight years old. Hamiltons is accessible by road (a five-and-a-half drive from Johannesburg, but be sure to check the gate closure times) or by air.
There are daily flights to Hoedspruit and the Kruger Mpumalanga International airports, as well as private charters to the park’s private airstrip, or to Skukuza.
