A historic castle perched on the hill overlooking central Windhoek, Hotel Heinitzburg is full of atmosphere and grandeur. Built in 1914 as an over-the-top romantic gesture by Count von Schwerin for his fiancée Margarethe von Heinitz, the castle has been restored and renovated as a luxury hotel to continue that tradition of extravagant romance. A ten minute walk down the hill to the city centre takes you to the shopping district and major attractions of Windhoek and the hotel is a delightful and elegant base for the beginning or end of a Namibian safari.
Sixteen spacious en-suite rooms are individually decorated with sophisticated flights of fancy and all the comforts. Dramatic touches of silver or gold bring a film star opulence to some rooms, while others have more subdued but still rich brocades, stately chandeliers and elegant period chairs and tables.
Big mirrors and sparkling light fittings bring plenty of light into the rooms and en-suite bathrooms, which are protected by the thick walls of the old castle building, some with enchanting little sitting areas in the original turrets. All the modern conveniences of air-conditioning and heating, flatscreen TV with satellite and electronic safe are provided.
The tranquil gardens have a swimming pool, which is heated in winter, and the garden terrace is a fantastic spot for sundowners, watching the spectacular view as the skies darken and twinkling lights appear in the spreading city below. Here you can enjoy light meals, cakes and pastries through the day, as well as cocktails and snacks.
The gourmet restaurant, Leo’s at the Castle, overlooks the same dramatic view and serves top quality fine-dining cuisine with a wide selection of excellent wines from the renowned cellars. These atmospheric cellars are also available as an intimate and unusual dining venue, as is the Knight’s Room with its historical artworks. Wi-fi is available in the main areas of the hotel.
Fabulous views, historic charm and a generous dash of opulent grandeur are all part of the appeal of Hotel Heinitzburg, as is the friendly service which infuses traditional African hospitality into the old-world castle ambience.
