Jao Camp is situated on a remote island on the southern side of Botswana’s Okavango Delta in an area famed for its magical islands fringed by riverine forests. This Botswana Safari offering comprises of nine luxury canvas and thatched tents, which are spacious and open-plan in design and include a dressing area, lounge and main bedroom complete with old-style fittings. Each tent is individually handcrafted and features en suite-facilities with an outdoor shower.

Constructed on raised decks, each one boasts a private sala for an afternoon ‘downtime’  with breathtaking views over the Delta’s floodplains. At Jao Camp, guests can unwind on their private verandas, or at the main lounge area that includes a small library and curio shop. On hot days guests can cool off in one of two plunge pools. Dinners in the outdoor boma are accompanied by excellent wines.  There is also a raised hide where guests are able to ‘sleep out’ and are transferred to after dinner with their guide, a torch, radio and hot flask of coffee or tea.  Jao Camp also has a spa with a wide range of massage therapies and treatments with hippos only a stone’s throw away.

This Botswana Safari destination is primarily a water-based camp where the game viewing activities are determined by the delta’s flood levels and the time of year. In the summer months, activities tend towards game drives, while in the winter months but also all year round, excursions on mokoros (dug-out canoes), fishing and boat trips, day and night game drives, and guided walks can be arranged. During an unusually high flood season, guests are taken by boat to nearby Hunda Island for a picnic, where 4×4 vehicles await to take them directly on their game drive.

The vast floodplains of the Delta offer some of the most unbelievable Botswana wildlife scenery. Here, large herds of red lechwe are often spotted, as well as their primary predators a pride of lions. Other game include zebra, buffalo, elephant, wildebeest, crocodile, leopard, and hippo. The diverse birdlife is truly remarkable in the Delta, and many resident avian treasures such as the African Harrier Hawk, Black Heron, Meyer’s Parrot, Malachite Kingfisher, Coppery-tailed Coucal, and Black Crake can be found at the Camp. A haven of tranquillity and luxury set on a secluded private island right in the heart of the Okavango Delta – Jao Camp is truly one of Botswana’s rare treasures.
