Built on the site of author Joy Adamson’s tented home, Joy’s Camp is perfectly positioned in an oasis that is surrounded by the arid lands of the Shaba National Reserve. The site was home to Penny the leopard who was the hero of Joy’s last book. With an incredible array of wildlife and unspoiled surroundings, it is a surprise that Samburu National Park is one of Kenya’s lesser-known regions. However, this means that it remains a tranquil place and provides guests with an authentic wildlife experience that you don’t get at the country’s busier game reserves.
Made up of 10 chic canvas rooms, Joy’s Camp boasts breathtaking views of the surrounding hills and the large natural spring where elephants, buffalo and lion satisfy their thirst in the evenings, alongside giraffe, zebra and the rare desert species of beisa oryx.
Each luxurious tent is uniquely furnished using local décor, vibrant fabrics and traditional African artifacts, which all combine to make a sophisticated and stylish medley.
Built on a raised platform, each tent has a private veranda, ideal for game viewing as well as relaxing and soaking up the peace and quiet in between game drives. The en suites are spacious and have all modern amenities, including flushing toilet, and shower with hot and cold running water.
Shaba National Reserve is a secluded strip in the eastern section of Samburu and although it is a dry area it is dotted with lush oasis’, springs and river gorges. While here guests can take game drives, guided bush walks and enjoy bush breakfasts along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River.
The sparkling swimming pool provides guests with the perfect place to cool off before heading out for sundowners or on a cultural visit to a Boran village (these are seasonal due to the tribes’ nomadic nature).
Joy’s Camp is the perfect place for discerning guests interested in a historical Kenyan experience, as well as for those looking to enjoy authentic game viewing while enjoying luxurious accommodation and soaking up the beauty of this truly unspoiled corner of Africa.
