Kaingo Camp enjoys an enviable location overlooking the mighty Luangwa River, in the South Luangwa National Park. Run by the Derek Shanton, the son of former ranger and warden of Kafue National Park, the camp is imbued with the spirit and essence of a family who have the wilderness in their blood. The camp was designed to maximize views of the river and a feeling of being one with the wilderness. Chalets open up onto private decks, where sunrises and sunsets can be enjoyed in all their glory. Kaingo possesses the perfect meeting of comfortable lodgings with the magic of the wild. A special feature are the photographic hides where guests can spend quality time with their cameras while cleverly concealed form the birds and animals.

South Luangwa National Park boasts some of Africa’s greatest safari land, with 95% guarantees of leopard viewing, as well as the rest of the Big 5. Solar power in the camp ensures that no creature is scared away with generator noise; where every chirp, song and roar can be heard.

Guests are swept away to the plains on a 4×4 with experienced guides, who are experienced at tracking down wild animals. Early morning drives culminate in a delicious brunch, washed down with piping hot coffee. Midday’s are best for lolling around the camp and enjoying the sounds of nature, or mingling with other guests over a light lunch.

The chalets are a cool respite from the heat where hippo and elephant can be viewed taking a drink from the river. The area is best explored on foot and is world-renowned for being walking safari country. There are two lion prides, ten leopards, elephant and hippo hides in the area, making for guaranteed game viewing.

Kaingo Camp offers the opportunity to transfer to Mwamba Bush as a combined safari holiday experience. The suggested 8 – 10 days can be split between the two camps, where guests can enjoy the changes in scenery and wildlife, including buffalo herds that roam between the two camps, numbering over 500.

The evening safari drive is generally interrupted at a scenic spot in the bush or on the riverside to watch the sunset and enjoy a cocktail under the brilliant fiery ochre African sky. Guests then return to camp under  a spray of stars, for an unforgettable dinner out in the wild.
