At Kakuli Bush Camp, guests are guaranteed to feel the heartbeat of Africa. With water being the essence of life, it is perhaps significant that Kakuli sits at the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. Kakuli means “old buffalo bull”, alluding to the fact that here, wildlife reigns supreme and an unbeatable experience embedded in the spirit of Africa is par for the course. As either a camp-to-camp stopover or a base for a more sedentary wildlife encounter, Kakuli Bush Camp is the only safari camp in Zambia that’s open in the Emerald (rainy) season, which runs from November through to March.Read More

This particular stretch of the Luangwa river, heaving with hippos, is also renowned for its prevalence of predators. And, as is well known, predators are best observed in the dusky, nebulous night. It stands to reason then that Kakuli Bush Camp offers some of the best night-viewing game safaris in Zambia.

Added to that, during the rainy season, the river is high and therefore game prolific. With no natural defences between the camp and the bush, spectacular guided river adventures above the flood lines and walking tours in the drier areas around camp only enhance an unforgettable experience.

A small lagoon fronts the central area (chitenje) that attracts all manner of wildlife, like elephant, that saunter imperturbably through camp; while a wooden deck overlooks a grazing area that leads to the confluence and lagoon. There’s simply no better place to sit and watch the world (and its wildlife) go by. Five spacious tents, built under thatched roofs, are traditionally appointed with open-air bathrooms – bringing the outside in and the taking the inside out and making the whole African encounter more vivid.

This is a place to come to if you want to relax, rejuvenate and simply revel in the peaceful serenity of nature. It’s Africa at its best – unfettered, unperturbed and unspoilt.

And drinking in scarlet sunset skies and mesmerising sunrises in a place like this is an experience guests will never forget.
