The impossibly crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi surround Kaya Mawa at the head of a crescent-shaped bay on Likoma Island, and surrounded by mango trees and ancient baobabs, the lodge offers sandy beaches and gently lapping warm water on tap. It’s so idyllic that it’s almost too much to absorb at once, which is why this remote island hideaway offers exactly what intrepid travellers require by the bucket load: relaxation, peace and quiet and restoration. In fact, the sanguine serenity of Lake Malawi is the perfect backdrop for this unique lodge that is also all about tranquillity and rejuvenation.

To get there, guests fly in to Likomo Island, and Kaya Mawa, by light aircraft, allowing them to take in breathtaking scenes en route. Once there, they are treated to wonderfully luxurious suites, all cleverly fitting into the surrounding rocky headlands and allowing direct access to the sandy shores and lake.

Each suite boasts a beautiful design that was created in partnershop with a local workshop and the sublime accommodation is just the starting block of the high levels of service here – nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and the cuisine is out of this world. Each room is supplied with snorkelling equipment; while sea kayaking and sailing options are also on offer.

Ndomo House, a private house that is attached to the resort and perfect for families, offers privacy and comfortable and chic accommodation that belies the rural charm of Malawi.

With the wide range of outdoor activities to choose from – snorkelling, scuba diving, mountain biking across the rocky terrain and guided visits to the small local community village – there’s also the option to just simply sit back and enjoy the natural surroundings of Kaya Mawa, and there’s simply no better way to unwind after a thrilling safari than to breathe in the sights and sounds of this idyllic spot.

This is African romance at its best, and it’s not surprising that Kaya Mawa was voted one of the top 10 “Most Romantic Places in the World” by Conde Nast.
