Casual opulence and barefoot luxury set the mood at Kinondo Kwetu. On a private stretch of sandy beach, several miles south of the busy resorts of Kenya’s Diani beach, the luxury hotel has a tranquil and leisurely vibe, its cottages and villas set in lush tropical gardens overlooking the warm Indian Ocean. A perfect honeymoon hide-away, it’s also a great destination for families and a wonderful place to relax and unwind after the thrills of a Kenyan safari. All sorts of water-sports, snorkelling, scuba diving and boating are on the spot, as well as horse-riding, tennis, spa treatments and nature walks in the sacred forest.
Kinondo Kwetu sleeps a maximum of 38 guests in a variety of cottages and villas spaced around the grounds. Each room is individually decorated with beautiful textiles, comfortable four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, carved wooden furniture and African artefacts, in an effortless decor that feels like a home from home, as indeed it is for the Swedish owners who take care of every detail. The round, palm-thatched cottages have large furnished verandahs and doors opening wide to the sounds of the breakers on the off-shore reef.
The Mama Taa villa offers two sets of inter-leading family rooms consisting of double, twin and ensuite-bathroom, and two further spacious double rooms, all with balconies or verandahs and lovely sea views. Then there are two separate suites, Borelius with two en-suite rooms, and Andersson, the very spacious honeymoon suite which also has air-conditioning.
Excellent meals are prepared from fresh local ingredients with varied 3 course set menus for lunch and dinner. While lunch is usually served at the beach restaurant area, dinner is in a surprise location, with couples often being treated to private meals in a romantic spot. Service here is warm and friendly with lots of staff seeing to all your needs cheerfully and discreetly.
Boat trips alongside dolphins, sunrise beach horse-rides, and scuba diving with the hotel’s dive master are just a few delights in store, or relax by the large swimming pool and watch the colobus monkeys from your shady day-bed: all part of another idyllic day in this beach paradise.
