Those with a sense of adventure are sure to love Kwihala, a mobile tented camp in a wildlife rich region of Ruaha National Park. Combine the thrill of sleeping under canvas with all the drama and excitement of game drives in this wild and remote reserve known for its large herds of elephant and excellent predator sightings.
Kwihala Camp delivers a classic big game safari with the focus firmly on game viewing and guiding. Your days start early, and after a quick snack of coffee and rusks you set off on your first game drive, stopping mid-morning in the shade of a tree for breakfast served on the bonnet of your vehicle. If you really want to maximise your sightings Kwihala also offers a full-day drive, around eight hours spent out tracking wildlife in this, Tanzania’s second largest national park.
And if it’s big game you want to see, you won’t be disappointed! Many guests at Kwihala see lion, cheetah and leopard every day of their stay, then there are the elephants down at the river or digging for water at their dusty wells, along with all the usual suspects: buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hyena and many more. Above all this, what makes Kwihala special is the high standard of the guiding; all the guides are extremely knowledgeable and entertaining, and go to great lengths to answer your questions and track down the animals that you want to see.
Back at camp there are six spacious tents, furnished with double or twin beds and a shaded verandah with a couple of safari chairs. Each tent also has an en-suite bathroom with a hot bucket shower, and solar-powered electric lights along with a much-needed socket to recharge you camera batteries after a full day of taking photos.
As for the food, it’s incredible what the chef manages to conjure up considering this camp is about as remote as you can get and just has a simple bush kitchen. Meals are a social affair with everyone sitting down together at one table, and some of the guides joining the guests to chat about the day’s sightings over a glass of wine and a cheese soufflé.
