Like Lake Mburo National Park itself, Lake Mburo Tented Camp is a hidden gem. This is a luxurious tented camp in the grand African safari tradition. Set in a commanding hilltop position overlooking Lake Mburo in the distance, Lake Mburo Tented Camp provides immaculate first-class service and comfort in an utterly unspoilt African bush setting. This is true camping, luxury style – with no fences between your canvas home and the great outdoors, you can expect an authentic wilderness experience in the midst of the African bush. At 260km2 Lake Mburo is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks, but its varied habitats support 68 mammal species and over 300 bird species.
The compact national park is conveniently close to the highway that connects Kampala to the parks of western Uganda. Game viewing includes sightings of impala, Burchell’s zebra, eland, warthog, buffalo, oribi, Defassa waterbuck and reedbuck. Leopard and hyena are also present, while crocodile and over 300 hippos are found in the lake. Previously extinct in the park, lions have recently been sighted again.
Lake Mburo forms part of a 50km-long wetland system linked by a swamp. Once covered by open savanna, the park now contains much woodland as there are no elephants to tame the vegetation. In the western part of the park, the savanna is interspersed with rocky ridges and forested gorges while patches of papyrus swamp and narrow bands of lush riparian woodland line many lakes.
In this superb African wilderness you will find the simple luxuries offered by nine sumptuous four-roomed tents set on wooden platforms with private veranda, twin bedrooms with mosquito nets, dressing room and en-suite bush shower and flush toilet. Hot water is provided to order, while solar power lights your home from home. Tents are spaced out for maximum privacy.
The dining and bar facilities are set under open-sided thatched roofs on raised wooden platforms that provide stunning views of Lake Mburo. Meals are freshly prepared in the kitchen to the very highest standards. Monkeys and warthogs wander by was you sit sipping drinks, while grazing hippos serve as ecofriendly lawnmowers.
Head off after pre-dawn tea and coffee on a wonderfully rewarding game drive, then return for a superb breakfast spread. Night drives and wildlife walks are also possible in this magical African Eden.
