A small family-run lodge very conveniently located for gorilla trekking just outside Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Le Bambou offers comfortable, value-for-money accommodation with warm hospitality and personal service from the owners. Located in the mountains with lovely views over the volcanoes and valleys, the lodge has traditional stone buildings set in lush gardens. The helpful owners can arrange everything from gorilla permits to airport transfers and special excursions, so this is an ideal and reasonably priced choice for independent travellers, who want the awe-inspiring experience of observing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
There are nine self-contained bandas, traditional stone cottages, set in the gardens among the bamboo, each with an en-suite bathroom with open shower. Electricity is generated in the mornings and evenings for hot water and charging of appliances, and hairdryers and mini-refrigerators are provided in each room. Simply furnished with bamboo furniture in keeping with the surroundings, the rooms all have fireplaces, where a log fire takes the chill off cool mountain evenings and there are hot water bottles in your beds at night too.
Hearty breakfasts and dinners are served at individual tables and there are traditional braziers of coals to warm you in the evenings, while lunches can be served al fresco with views over the volcano in warm weather. Locally grown vegetables and fruits are used to create tasty meals with a good selection of dishes to choose from.
Gorilla trekking is the main attraction here, and early breakfasts and transfers to the visitors centre for the start of the trek are all part of the service. There are plenty of other activities in the area included in your stay, so you can also visit the twin lakes, hike to the Musanze waterfalls, visit the local village and community projects. The owners are also happy to arrange any other additional excursions you’d like, tailoring your Rwanda experience to suit your interests.
Altogether Le Bambou has a rustic charm that is amplified by the warm welcome and personalised service of the owners who go out of their way to give you the best experience of their beautiful country.
