A quiet and intimate camp spread around a lush watering hole on the other side of the Mara River from the Governors’ main camp in Kenya’s Masai Mara, Little Governors’ Camp has an atmosphere of secluded adventure. There’s the river crossing to reach it and then the amazing diversity of wildlife on this side of the river, including elephants wandering through camp. Right in the middle of prime big cat country, the game viewing is excellent all year round and when the Great Migration reaches the Masai Mara in July until October there is the added drama of the wildebeest herds.
The seventeen very comfortable tented suites are arranged strategically around a waterhole at the edge of the forest where many animals come to drink and wallow. The camps askari (rangers) are always on duty to escort guests to and from tents, especially after dark when you may be lulled to sleep by a chorus of frogs, hippos and maybe even snoring elephants.
King-size wooden beds, comfortable camp furniture with an old-world feel and polished wooden floors make this far more than the name tent suggests. The ensuite bathroom with wooden panelled shower and ample hot water adds all the necessary comforts to the safari experience.
Breakfast and lunch are served al fresco on the river bank in the shade of the trees, often in the company of the resident warthogs. Dinner by candlelight in the dining tent has the romance of bygone safari days, with excellent menus freshly prepared and served by warm and friendly staff.
Early morning tea or coffee heralds the morning game drive with your experienced and knowledgeable guide whisking off to find the most interesting sightings of the morning. There’s also the option of taking a picnic breakfast along and having a longer drive. Two drives a day are included and you can add on a walking safari, a balloon trip and a cultural visit to a Masai village.
Altogether Little Governors’ offers an authentic safari experience in beautiful surroundings, with all the comforts and a wealth of exciting game viewing.
