Secluded, intimate and luxurious, Mara Plains Camp provides a top of the range safari experience in a stunning setting. Perched overlooking the Ntuakatek River in riverine forest, it is one of only four camps in the Olare Motorongi  conservancy and borders on the Masa Mara Game Reserve. This allows for excellent game viewing both of the legendary big cats and also the drama of the Great Migration, but without any of the crowds too often found in the main reserve. Game drives and meals are tailored to suit you with excellent personal service.Read More

Only 7 luxury suites at Mara Plains make it one of the smallest and most exclusive camps in the whole of the Masai Mara. Refurbished in 2013, each tented suite is slightly different in decor, but all are spacious, beautifully furnished and set on solid wooden decks raised to overlook the river. Beautiful copper bath-tubs are a feature of the en-suite bathrooms and the furnishings of wood and brass evoke an old-world nostalgia.

The family suite has two tents on the same deck and the Honeymoon suite is set high on stilts in two layers. 24 hour solar powered electricity and sensitive integration into the environment make for a low-impact, eco-friendly footprint. Each tent is equipped with a top quality camera and binoculars for guests’ use.

There is no set camp routine, each day unfolds according to your preferences and the movements of the wildlife. Being in a conservancy there are no time restrictions, so an afternoon drive might extend into the night after sundowners and snacks, returning to late dinner after some fascinating sightings of nocturnal animals on the prowl.

Early risers might leave before dawn with a packed breakfast to spend time watching a leopard and cubs at a kill, or you might choose to sleep late and enjoy game viewing at your own pace. Photography is a particular area of expertise, with vehicles especially designed for the dedicated wildlife photographer.

It’s the peace, flexibility and intimacy, as well as the luxury, that make Mara Plains such a special way to experience the magic of Africa.

Large Canvas Tents on Raised Decks

The camp is nestled in lush forest on the meandering bends of the Ntiakitiak River, and careful thought was given to every detail. The camp is not an imposition on the landscape, but rather a subtle refuge among the wild. The camp’s main area takes your breath away; positioned just so, the horizon lies ahead, punctuated by a single acacia tree. It’s the Africa of the mind’s eye. Flanking the main mess area is the library, an area to enjoy a quiet afternoon passing the time reading books or editing photographs. Flowing fabrics, open-air spaces and strong teak structures ground the space. Each of the seven tents has deep canvas canopied ceilings, rough hewn wood floors and accents of East Africa’s rich safari history. Thick Lamu wood doors, deep purples, and brass accents – these small details transport guests to a time and land far away. The well-appointed en-suite facilities (including a deep copper bath) plus the extensive private verandah complete what is genuinely a stunning concept. These stylistic elements coupled with thoughtful environmental elements such as solar power and an absence of cement make Mara Plains is a modern-day safari retreat. Tents 1 & 2 share a deck and can act as a family unit. Tents 4 & 7 can serve as honeymoon tents. Tents 5 and 6 are most suitable for guests with limited mobility. Tents 3 & 5 is closest to the main area with minimal steps and a banister.
