Quirky tree-houses, sublime luxury, a tranquil bush setting and a welcoming family ambience are perhaps the last things you’d expect of a Nairobi hotel, but Ngong House has its own unique flair and style. Set in 10 acres of unspoilt bush gardens in the Nairobi suburb of Karen, where once Karen Blixen’s coffee farm was located, the hotel is a wonderful place to stay before and after a Kenya safari, conveniently close to Wilson airport but secluded away from the city bustle, full of indigenous bird life and African atmosphere, and with very flexible and generous hospitality.
Each of the six enchanting luxury tree-houses is unique and hand-crafted. Some are set on stilts peeking over the tree-tops to views of the Ngong Hills, with a winding spiral staircase to reach your very comfortable perch and a shady thatched roof set deep over an open verandah.
All have comfortable beds draped in mosquito netting, spacious living areas and en-suite bathrooms, but here again each is individual and you may find yourself relaxing in a steaming canoe shaped bath. If a tree-house sounds a bit too adventurous, there is a snug private cottage and a family sized log cabin sleeping six, or those who can’t cope with stairs can book the suite in the main house.
Guests gather around a camp fire for pre-dinner drinks with owner and host Paul Verleysen before wonderful meals served in the thatched rondavel or by the open fire in the lodge itself.
Skilful Kenyan chefs prepare four-course dinners from the freshest local ingredients and even if your flight is delayed and you arrive late in the evening a warm welcome and delicious meal awaits. Sumptuous breakfasts and lunches are served in a shady spot in the garden or on the verandah.
Close to the notable Karen attractions of the Giraffe Centre, the Karen Blixen Museum and the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, this is a great place to absorb the flavours and atmosphere of Africa even if you aren’t heading off on safari and just want a relaxing and romantic break from the stresses of city and travel.
