The wilds of Namibia with its dry desert plains and dramatic mountain ranges is the setting for Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, which perches above the seasonal Hoarusib River in total tranquillity and surprising luxury. The unspoilt malaria-free Purros Valley is a nature conservancy and home to the desert adapted lion, elephant and other hardy wildlife and is inhabited by the nomadic Himba people whose culture and lifestyle hasn’t changed for centuries. The airstrip close to the remote lodge is a 2 ½ hour light aircraft flight from Windhoek, or the intrepid can arrive by 4×4 as part of a Namibian adventure.
The seven terracotta adobe suites of the lodge have an out of this world quality, clustered along a rise in the vastness of a beautiful and deserted landscape. Inside all is luxury, big four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, carved wooden furniture, a large en-suite bathroom with two showers and a big bathtub set in the window to look out over the endless views, and a verandah leading out to a gazebo with a big day-bed to siesta or star-gaze.
At the main lodge you can cool off in the heat of the afternoon with a dip in the turquoise infinity pool and at night, as temperatures drop, enjoy candlelit dinners in the airy dining rooms or boma, where Italian influences and African flavours combine to create varied menus from fresh ingredients grown at the lodge.
The lodge works with the Desert Lion Project to protect the desert lion, and game drives seek out the rare lions, elephants, and rhinos who have adapted to desert conditions, along with giraffe, mountain zebra and birdlife.
While game may be harder to find and less numerous than in other lusher areas, the rewards come from the drama of the unique landscapes themselves and the sense of awe in the people and animals that survive and flourish here. Informal and authentic visits to the local Himba village give an insight into their culture and pastoralist traditions.
A remote and beautiful desert escape where time slows, Okahirongo Elephant Lodge is an oasis of luxury in a fascinating Namibian journey.
