Okahirongo River Camp

A welcoming eco-friendly lodge in the most remote corner of Namibia’s desert wilderness, Okahirongo River Camp provides a luxury refuge in a land of stark and dramatic beauty. Set on the banks of the Kunene River in the Marienfluss valley on the border with Angola, the river fringe of lush vegetation contrasts with the dry plains, dunes and mountains of this spectacular landscape. A three hour flight in a light aircraft from Windhoek, or a shorter hop from sister camp Okahirongo Elephant Lodge, the journey here is part of the adventure, discovering one of the most sparsely populated areas in Southern Africa.

The camp itself is like an oasis of green among the browns of the surrounding scenery. Overlooking the river are six wood and canvas suites built on stilts above the rocky terrain, one being a two-bedroom family tent.

The comfortable bedrooms have big four-poster beds draped in mosquito netting, decked in crisp linen and rich fabric throws, and a contemporary African chic décor that is uncluttered and atmospheric. The en-suite bathrooms have both inside and outdoor showers and the sound of the river flowing below is the ultimate luxury in this dry desert land.

The central lodge area has plenty of space for relaxing, in the two lounges, the library or around the swimming pool, which is the ideal place to cool down and doze away hot summer afternoons. Dinner under the stars or in the elegant dining area is a feast of Italian- African cuisine with an excellent collection of South African wines to complement it.

Boat trips down the river, watching crocodiles basking on the banks and viewing the bird-life, morning hikes and drives in the dunes and valleys to track the desert wild-life such as the oryx, ostrich and giraffe that manage to survive in this harsh climate, and visits to the local Himba village, where the semi-nomadic people are welcoming  and gracious, all give a fascinating perspective on this little-known wilderness.

The warm welcome, complete comfort and fabulous scenery make Okahirongo River Camp well worth the effort of travelling so far off the beaten track.
