Onkoshi Camp

A luxurious and remote safari escape awaits guests at Onkoshi Camp, the first and to date the only lodge set within the borders of Etosha National Park. Onkoshi Camp has a captivating location on a secluded peninsula entirely out of view of current tourist routes. With just 15 chalets this small lodge delivers a completely different experience from the park’s large rest camps, and is the perfect choice for visitors wanting to enjoy Etosha’s wide open spaces, without the disturbance of cars, fences or crowds of people.

Choose between one of the tented chalets built on elevated wooden decks right on the rim of the pan. Glass retractable doors lead onto wrap-around balconies, so you can really open your room up and laze in bed staring out at the view.

The regular chalets all have two ¾ beds while the honeymoon suite is furnished with a comfortable king-size. In the en-suite bathrooms you’ll find a beautiful stone bathtub (again with that magnificent view), as well as both an indoor and outdoor shower.

Staying at Onkoshi gives you the chance to explore the north-eastern region of Etosha, an area that is not open to self-drive visitors. In fact guests don’t drive to the lodge either, but leave their cars at Namutoni Rest Camp where they are met and transferred to Onkoshi.

Activities at the lodge include morning and afternoon game drives, as well as night drives and the chance to see Etosha’s nocturnal creatures including brown hyena, honey badgers and jackals. Although on the whole it must be said that the game viewing here is not as good as it is in the more popular (and busier) regions of the park.

Instead the focus here is less on a safari and more on simply enjoying the beauty of this isolated area: the shimmering mirages across the pan during dry season and huge flocks of flamingoes and pelicans during the wet, the blood-red sunsets, and the clear night sky filled with millions of stars.

You can really get away from it all at Onkoshi. The camp has a beautiful setting, the area is great for photography and you get a true feeling of tranquillity and space.
