Self-drive along the Garden Route and a luxury safari

Hi Ilze,

We had a wonderful time in S. Africa.  It’s such a vibrant country with lots of diverse lifestyles, animals and countryside and great food.

We enjoyed the Garden Route.  If I was to do it again, I would spend less time in the car (bad planning on our part) and I would go during the time of year when the towns are more busy.  Lots of businesses and restaurants were closed.  Otherwise it was very lovely and not too cold.  The people at Elephant Hide could not have been nicer.

Load shedding threw us for a loop but we only had to deal with it twice; once walking into a restaurant called Bocca in Cape Town and the lights went out.  They couldn’t seat us once the power went out.  It was disappointing because it is owned by friends of my dear friend.  The second time was when we arrived at Elephant Hide.  It was spookily pitch dark.  It was funny once we realized we weren’t in the wrong place.

The safaris were the highlight of our trip.  We preferred the employees and the lodge at &Beyond Ngala Safari Lodge over Londolozi Founder’s Lodge.  The landscape of Sabi Sands and being next to a river with water in it made it the more interesting reserve.  If I was to go back to Sabi Sands I would stay with &Beyond.

The guided car rides in Cape Town and all the accommodations and the transfers were all very nice.  Your recommendations were spot on.   Thank you. thank you.

One tiny suggestion is to let Americans know that upon returning that if they say they were on safari, they may have to go through additional screening (as we did) and remove their shoes from their luggage and have them dusted off.

All in all a great time.

Karen
