Secluded, exclusive and scenic, Sand Rivers in the Selous National Park rests alongside the Rufiji River. Thatched cottages, built from natural stone offer accommodation in only five rooms and three suites. Described as ‘relaxed and elegant’ by previous guests, staff honour the African tradition of warm hospitality and provide friendly, professional service. Tanzania is known for its rich wildlife, and game is known to pass within feet of the rooms, making total submersion in nature possible. Guests are greeted with the sound of early-morning bird call and will fall asleep to the noises of hippos and other nocturnal animals at night.
Placing a special emphasis on “letting the outside in”, the main lodge has been designed to make the most of the natural surroundings – a magnificent ancient baobab stands sentry over the main lodge. Open-sided decks overlook the majestic river, offering a quiet, cool spot during the day and a cosy, candlelit sanctuary at night. The dining area is open-fronted, allowing maximum exposure to the wilderness. Suited to the hot climate, meals are simple, tasty, not overly heavy, and are served either in the mess or on picnics in the bush. As night draws near, guests can enjoy a sundowner in a beautiful spot in the bush, or back at the lodge.
Game drives offer outstanding game spotting – leopard, wild dog, elephants, giraffe, lion and various buck are frequently spotted and guides revel in the adventure of tracking game for their guests. Walking safari’s offer an exciting chance to get in touch with nature and the monkeys that are regular visitors to the camp provide many hours of amusement. Boating safaris are both a relaxing and breathtaking way to explore the water-based wildlife. A stone walkway hugs the river shoreline, offering a great spot to view the hippo and crocodiles.
Airy rooms are furnished with spacious beds that are draped in mosquito nets. Suites have their own plunge pool and the main pool invites guests to take a refreshing plunge in between game drives. Described as the “perfect balance of wilderness and beautiful accommodation”, Sand Rivers has many guests returning.
