This luxury tented camp in the world-famous Serengeti National Park is the perfect temporary home for the adventurous at heart, who want to explore the vast plains of Africa in all its natural splendor without sacrificing an inch of comfort. Opened in December 2012, this camp builds on the tradition of the 1930s style mobile camp, adding nothing but quite a bit more comfort. The 10 luxury tents are ideally situated on a kopje (small hill), which is within close range of the fascinating boulders of the Moru Kopjes and the mesmerising Lake Magadi.
Although the camp is designed and built to leave no footprint on the environment, it doesn’t hold back on the creature comforts that make luxury camping so enjoyable. En suite bathrooms with flushing toilets and classic safari interiors is the name of the game, as well as solid wooden furniture, stylish deckchairs and quality linen on the beds – which are romantically lit with hanging lanterns. Having the whole of the Serengeti as a visual backdrop simply adds to the allure.
However, the real highlight of the camp is the awe-inspiring animals that roam the open plains of the most famous game park in the world. Over a million wildebeest trek across the plains every year, accompanied by predators who try to take advantage. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, the African wild dog – at Pioneer Camp you’ll be in the perfect spot to observe these powerful beasts in their natural habitat. Add elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffe, the Nile crocodile and birdlife that will drop any birdwatcher’s jaw and a veritable real-life Lion King and guests are in for a treat.
Game drives take place twice a day, accompanied by experienced game rangers that will not only share their inside info on African wildlife with you, but also help you to spot the more elusive animals in their camouflaged state.
Pioneer Camp is situated just off the B144, the major road through the Serengeti, which means you’ll spend less time on the road, and more time simply relaxing and becoming part of the majestic landscape.
