An oasis in a breathtakingly beautiful wilderness, Serra Cafema is one of the most remote luxury camps in Southern Africa. Shaded by Albida trees on the each of the Kunene River, it is surrounded by the dry and dramatic desert landscapes of Namibia’s northern border and is one of the few places on earth that you really are away from it all. A three hour flight in a light aircraft followed by an hour drive to the camp offers awe-inspiring views of the spectacular other-worldly scenery with glimpses of the wildlife that has adapted to this harsh environment.

There’s nothing harsh about life in camp however. Eight luxury canvas and thatch suites are set amongst the green trees and reeds overlooking the river, where the gurgling sound of rapids downstream is a reassuring contrast to the surrounding dunes and dry mountain landscapes.

Raised on wooden platforms, the large bedroom and lounge open onto a shaded private deck with a dining area and hammock and the ensuite bathroom has both indoor and outdoor showers. The décor combines simple modern lines with traditional safari elements, canvas and leather chairs, crisp linen, ceiling fans and gauzy mosquito netting.

The knowledgeable guides take guests on journeys of exploration looking at all the hidden wonders of this unique environment: 4×4 game drives discovering how the oryx, ostrich and giraffe survive with so little water, quad-biking  in the dunes carefully guided to have minimal impact, river cruises viewing  the Nile crocodiles in the river, and walks and hikes in achingly beautiful empty landscapes, with sundowners at panoramic viewpoints.

Visiting the nomadic Himba people is another highlight, sensitively managed to give genuine insights into a way of life adapted to a demanding desert existence.

In between activities there is the tranquillity of the lodge to return to, with a swimming pool, several comfortable lounge areas on decks above the river and a comfortable inside lounge, library and dining area, where wonderful meals are served by the charming and attentive staff.
