Drawn from the skeletal lines of the shipwrecks which haunt Namibia’s legendary Skeleton Coast, Shipwreck Lodge has been described as one of Africa’s most inspired escapes. Created by Natural Selection, whose camps can be found in some of Africa’s most remote and beautiful wildlife concessions, Shipwreck Lodge is perhaps the most faraway of all! Its location in the spectacular Skeleton Coast Central Concession allows for unforgettable views across the surreal desertscape of undulating dunes and the Atlantic Ocean beyond.Read More

It has the most picturesque perch on the southern bank of the Huarusib River, just a stone’s throw of 68km north from Möwe Bay, from where guests will be transferred by vehicle.

Igniting the imagination of every age of traveller, from adventurous honeymooners and exploring families, Shipwreck Lodge’s view of the austere Atlantic lies unhindered by the almost protective sand dunes surrounding it. All rooms have a writing desk, bedside lamp and wood-burning stove, the perfect setting for capturing your day’s sightings and adventures on paper! The 8 twin/double rooms and two family tents all have their own en suite bathrooms with a shower, toilet and washbasin, furnished with Natural Selection’s signature guest amenities and finishing touches.

True to nature, Shipwreck Lodge incorporates earth-friendly materials and eco-conscious amenities throughout, running entirely on solar-power. The restaurant is the culin

Central to the cluster of cabins is a lounge and restaurant, skirted by a wraparound deck designed to gently lure the gaze out across the vast dunes and beyond to the ocean.

The towering dunes and rugged beach, cooled by the breeze blowing in from over the almost arctic Benguela Current, are home to the protected desert-adapted lions, scavenging wild dogs, rarely sighted brown hyenas, herds of regal oryx, desert-dwelling lions, the endangered black rhino, black-faced impala and Hartmann’s mountain zebra. Birdlife is exceptional, with birdwatching one of the lodge’s most asked-for activities – alongside a 4X4 adventure to see the fascinating geological formation of the Clay castles, a known hideout for the shy brown hyena. Fishing (weather permitting) and guided walks are other activities on offer.

Another top activity is a day trip to Möwe Bay to experience the unique seal colony and the incredible reed wind-shelter sculpted by nature at the Flamingo pools! Explore the historical highlights such as the Karimona and Suiderkruis (‘Southern Cross’) shipwrecks, the abandoned Westies diamond mine and the ruins of the Ventura Bomber.

After a lavish lunch on the beach, guests can close the day’s adventure at the top of the dunes to soak up the surrendering sun, feet deep in the warm sand and a deliciously chilled sundowner in hand. (Whilst there is complimentary Wi-Fi access, guests usually prefer to disconnect from the digital and reconnect instead with nature!)
