Tarangire Sopa is a large lodge with 75 air-conditioned rooms set amongst the trees of a wooded valley in wildlife-packed Tarangire National Park. The real highlight of this lodge is its location, deep in the park close to good game viewing areas, with elephant frequently wandering by close to the rooms, monkeys entertaining guests with their antics, and brightly coloured birds flitting through the tree branches.
This is not a traditional safari lodge, but rather hotel-style accommodation with simple, clean and spacious rooms housed in double-story circular buildings with high, thatched roofs. Each room is comfortably furnished with two queen-size beds and has glass sliding doors that open onto a private balcony – the upper-level rooms having slightly better views out over the surrounding bushes. Wherever you stay you’ll find that the accommodation has been well laid out, and you’re never too far from the main lodge area.
Mornings at Tarangire are spent on guided game drives in this wonderfully scenic reserve, renowned for its huge herds of elephants. The game viewing here is particularly good during Tanzania’s dry season when wildlife gathers at the life-giving Tarangire River (running north-south through the park) and you’ll also find that although this is one of Tanzania’s most accessible parks it receives fewer visitors than the other reserves of the popular Northern Safari Circuit – so when you do come across a lion or leopard you won’t be jostling for space with other safari vehicles.
After your morning game drive, look forward to a buffet lunch enjoyed al fresco in the pretty pool area. Early afternoons can be spent stretched out on one of the cushioned sun loungers alongside the pool with its swim-up bar, or catching up with friends back home using the lodge’s free WiFi (a rarity in Tanzania) before setting out once again for more thrilling game viewing.
In the evening, join other guests for a sundowner drink out on the terrace then round off your day with a tasty a la carte dinner served in the main restaurant with its floor-to-ceiling windows and wonderful views out over the waterhole below.
